The 'VCV RACK'

Course

Explore the art of modular synthesis in our immersive, one-month VCV Rack course. In four weeks, you’ll go from basic oscillators to complex, evolving soundscapes. You'll explore powerful tools like VCOs, filters, sequencers, DSP effects, etc. Designed for beginners and emerging producers, this course teaches you to build and perform with your own virtual modular system. No prior experience or gear needed.

NO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED
Our school is open to everyone, regardless of prior knowledge or experience. Whether you're a complete novice or have never touched the equipment before, our program is designed to teach you from the ground up. We provide an inclusive and accessible learning environment where beginners are encouraged to start their Sound design journey with confidence.

MODULE 0.5 : ARRIVAL, ORIENTATION & SETUP

  • Install VCV Rack, set up plugins, and audio routing

  • Introduction to Eurorack and the VCV ecosystem

  • Meet your patching community

MODULE 1 : PHYSICS OF SOUND + EURORACK BASICS

  • Intro to cables, ports, and modular signal flow

  • The anatomy of sound: frequencies, harmonics, envelopes

  • Audio vs Control Voltage (CV), gates, and triggers

  • Virtual modular vs hardware Eurorack: what's the same, what's not

  • Navigating VCV Rack: cables, modules, signal chain logic

MODULE 1.A : OSCILLATORS, FILTERS, MODULATION

  • Understanding sound sources: oscillators and modulation sources.

  • Core waveforms and their harmonic behavior

  • Subtractive synthesis with filters (LP, HP, Band-pass)

  • Modulation using LFOs (Tremolo, vibrato, filter movement, etc.)

  • Signal routing and feedback

MODULE 2 : ENVELOPES & VCAs – SHAPING SOUND

  • The ADSR envelope explained, beyond just “shape”

  • ADSR vs AR envelopes, contouring audio

  • VCAs and CV-controlled amplitude

  • How to connect envelopes to filters, VCAs, pitch, etc.

  • What VCAs do and why every synth uses them

  • VCAs as audio gates and modulation depth controllers

  • Using EGs to control volume, pitch, filter cutoff​

MODULE 2.A : SEQUENCING, RHYTHM & CONTROL SIGNALS

  • Clock vs Gate vs Trigger - what’s the difference?

  • Simple vs complex sequencers

  • Creating melodies, basslines, drum patterns

  • Clock division and swing

  • Using arpeggiators, quantizers and randomizers

  • Understanding pitch CV (1V/Oct)

  • Polyphonic vs monophonic sequencing

MODULE 3 : DSP & SYNTHESIS TECHNIQUES

  • Subtractive, Additive, FM, Wavetable, Granular Synthesis techniques

  • Textural sound design using noise and modulation

  • Learn about DSP (Digital Sound Processing)

  • ​Creative use of reverb, delay, distortion and other effects for texture

  • Layering: mixing dry/wet signals, routing FX

MODULE 3.A : MULTILAYERED + SELF-GENERATING PATCHES

  • Learn advanced routing techniques for polyrhythms, textures, and evolving patterns.

  • Introduction to randomness and generative patching.

  • Logic gates, feedback and probability circuits

  • Building multi-voice patches (drums, bass, melody, FX).

  • Creating ambient or techno self-running patches​

MODULE 4 : HYBRID SETUPS & RECORDING

  • Introduction to hardware and real analog gear 

  • MIDI controller integration

  • Using VCV with Ableton, FL, Bitwig, or Logic

  • Audio routing, MIDI-CV, and signal splitting

  • Using mutes, macros, and feedback safely

  • CPU management and preset morphing

  • ​Recording your patch, capturing stems or using audio interfaces

MODULE 4.A : PERFORMANCE, COMPOSITION & GRADUATION

  • ​Apply everything and create a playable instrument

  • Showcase your skills acquired throughout the course 

  • Final patch showcase and recording

  • Mini performance showcase

  • Graduation ceremony with certification symbolizing your proficiency in modular synthesis.
